Default Replacement key question

I just bought a 2002 VDP, and only got one black master key and remote from the (non-Jaguar) dealer. I have contacted the car's former owner asking if he has any others, but so far no reply. Assuming that fails, can a Jag dealer order a new pre-cut key via the VIN number? I read the very informative article on our site about self-programming keys & remotes, but it seemed to only apply to the switch-blade type keys. Mine has a black plastic head with a separate remote on a ring (just like my '99 had). I don't much care about having a spare remote; I just want a back-up key that will operate the car manually. What are my options?

From all that I have read here, you will have to take the car to a dealer, where they will provide a new key and reprogram both to the car.

The key can be cut from VIN info if the Dealer has a key cutting machine.
The dealer can also order a cut-key from VIN info but either way you will need to provide 'proof-of-ownership'.

Unless you have dealer level diagnostic equipment, the key cannot be configured to the car. A trip to the dealer or independent shop with the correct equipment can get the keys mated to the car (ALL KEYS MUST BE PRESENT)!!!!!

If you are ever in the DFW area of Texas, I can programme the keys to the car with WDS.

Check your local key shop. Some have the equipment to cut and program as many keys as you need. I had a mobile unit come to me and cut and program keys I bought via the web. I had to some checking as most shops don't do this type of work with our type keys and program. They are out there. I live in a small town, just traveled to a larger area and found them. Good Luck...Dealer is never the first choice, but may have to go that way if an indy shop can't help.

Proof Jaguar owners are good people. I got an envelope in the mail today from my car's former owner with the spare master key, valet key and a remote. Moral: ALWAYS politely contact former owners to see if they have any goodies that were forgotten when car was traded in. Over the years, I have had success about 40% of the time with various cars. Worth trying!

I had the same thing happen 3 years ago except I met him in person, I was on my bike and he was bummed he didn't get to see his "Baby" offered to buy it back for double what I paid!
