Replacing a fuel pump
I'm in the process of replacing fuel pump on 2001 XJ8. I've got pump reassembled in old down bracket and I'm ready to splice in the new connector, but I have a question as to where I should make splice. Existing wiring harness has 2 leads for fuel pump that pass through a black box about the size of a match book and about 1/4" thick that is at about the mid point in the line. I've been researching the last couple weeks and recall seeing a post somewhere indicating a failure point with negative lead ........., can't find it again. I'm assuming it should stay for a purpose, but just checking before I put it back together, that the black box isn't a failure point to consider. I put a meter to the existing leads and I'm reading .05 ohm on each so I'm guessing it's some kind of resistor.
That's exactly what it looks like, but couldn't figure why there would be one on wiring inside the tank. The leads on the new connector appear long enough to attach either side of the filter and I figured I'd leave it in, I just don't want to have to ever do this job again. I've found as I've progressed that it's been done before (car has a new tank, and bad fuel pump had salvage shop pen on it, but it was a repo so it may have just been preventive measure). I'm having to repair the two fuel lines at back of tank along with everything else so I just don't want to have to pull it once I get it all back together. Thanks for the input. You ever need to do a timing job or ABS repair let me know, I've already been there.
