Default Replacing Serpentine Belt

Can anyone tell me how to replace the serpenine belt on a 2000 XJ8 VDP. Is this hard to do, and does it require any special tools or tricks. Hate to pay the dealer if I can do it.

Pretty simple, to say the least. Step by step at www.alldatadiy.com - cheap subscription for a year, well worth the price.

Default Serpentine Belt

I agree with Markus about Alldata. The belt is no problem if you have a fairly large wrench that will fit the bolt that holds the belt tensioner pulley, and you just lever against the spring tension so that the belt gets slack, take it off and reverse to replace. It's funny how the routing of the belt looks so simple before you take it off ... and so hard to figure out how it goes back on once you try to route the new one - without a diagram !

Here's a diagram of the serpentine belt routing through a standard XJ8 w/o supercharger. Hope it helps.

I hope he's done it by now - the thread was posted in April 2009.

Gear Wrench makes a great tool. Available at Sears and some auto parts stores. Take
pictures with your phone before removing the old belt.

Easy to do.
My tip: take a few pics with your phone first.

You could even take pictures with a, erm, oh I've forgotten what they were called, oh yeah, camera. That's it, a camera. Apparently, people used to take pictures with them.

And after you have sent the film off for processing, waited a week or so to get the photos back, found out half are over/ under exposed and the rest are out of focus ....

Or you could just get out a pencil and paper, and do a sketch in what ? about 5 mins ? including getting the kids to lend you a pencil and paper !
