Question Replacing Speakers

The speakers are a bit worn out, they rattle at higher volume. Do I try and find OEM replacements, or use modern non factory? The radio and CD changer work perfectly

You'll likely find much better quality replacements in the aftermarket for the same or less cost as OEM replacements. No reason to not upgrade.

I have a 98 XJR with the Harmon Kardon system. Anyone know if there is an exact speaker size I can replace all my doors with? Do you folks also usually replace the tweeters or just upgrade the actual speakers

As someone mentioned a couple of days ago, the main door speakers are 6.5"

If you can upgrade to a set of components with a proper crossover then you'll definitely hear the difference, but you'll want some power to get them really singing.
I modified the tweeter mounts and basically just hot glued my tweeters into the original locations. It's not ideal, as they're pointing in an awful direction, but it keeps it looking stock.
If you have premium, then the a-pillar locations are a lot better

Thank you for your help and answer. Oddly, I ended up popping one of my speaker grilles yesterday in the rear (all 4 are the same) and when I measured, the speaker was 5.25 inches. Am I measuring wrong? Its an odd car to buy speakers for as when you go through Amazon for example. whatever you pick it says they wont fit

Also since I have the HK system, what size are the tweeters if I do end up going with components? TIA

I've had better luck in the past going through Crutchfield for car audio components.

Crutchfield is showing a bunch of different sizes as fitting. In the past Ive been able to use their online speaker fitting guide then find those speakers significantly cheaper on Amazon, but in the case of this car its hard to know what exactly to even order

I just spoke with a Crutchfield rep and they say the stock size is 6.75, and that 6.5 and 5.25 can be used with adapters, so even more confusion

EDIT: Sorry just realized they were 2 ohm, I believe we need 4 ohm

Yip you need 4 ohm, as per industry standard.

Who makes 2ohm? Weird...
Actually, I have heard of Infinity doing this, as it's a way to get more power out of aftermarket amps.
They make good speakers, but they're becoming a 'best of the rest' brand, rather than proper high end. Mind you, for the money, they are still very good.
If you wanted to up the budget into the $3-400 range there should be a few better options though. DLS, Rainbow, even the proper high end Alpine and Pioneer are really, REALLY nice.

As for tweeters... no idea what fits in the pillars, sorry but don't be afraid to make the holes a bit bigger to fit something in. It will be worth it!

I would need to double check the wiring diagrams as well, but aren't the front speakers run active? ie the crossover is done by the amp, rather than a separate crossover unit?

Could be worse... the OEM speakers in my 328 are 3 ohm units, go figure (4s work fine to replace, as I did the rears last year, but still.. what were they thinking?)
