replacing XJR rear wheel bearings

I have a 2001 XJR with 64K miles. During annual inspection, the mechanic told me that I need new rear wheel bearings. Cost is around $480 labor and $100 for parts. He said that he must pull the entire rear axle to replace the bearings (total of around 5-6 hours).
Has anyone had any experience with this type of repair?
Thx....Gary
