Default Rusted Rear shock lower bolt time! Yay! :) Pics inside!

Well, I have been dealing with a blown RR shock since late last year. I just put in a set of OESpectrum rear shocks from advance. They were about $60 each. They do have the special lower "bushing/bearings." I also cut my rear rotors. I have pics below of the process I used to take care of the rusted RH rear bolt. The left came out very easily.

I started out using 7/8" socket on an impact to remove the lower nut. I tapped on it with a hammer with the nut screwed on to help save threads from mushrooming....dont do this, it will make it hard to start the nut later. Once you break the nut free, use your impact to turn the bolt head of the lower shock bolt. If it doesnt make complete turns very quickly, you know the bolt is frozen to the shock bearing race. Time to break out the cut off wheel!

Up on jacks!

Turning the rotor!

The affected area. You can see the wd40 everywhere and that is the bottom of the shock the lower bolt is protruding from!

Cut the shock body like this!

Then make another cut like it as close to 180* off from that as you can. This will allow the bushing to come out easier. Then you will be left with this!

Cut the outer race of the bearing in the same fashion as the first cut. It will look like this. The grease will begin to boil and smoke a little, but its all worth it!

Make a similar cut about 180* off from that and you are basically left with this. This is the outer bearing race that is being cut.

Next post for more pics! Dont know what the limit is!

The ball thing in the middle is the "inner bearing race" or sleeve that the bolt goes through.

Make a cut longitudinally on the inner race.

Success!!!

Look at this long sucker! This is after I put it on the wire brush. You can see how pitted the bolt was where it went through the shock bearing! I wanted to use antiseize but it turned out I was out! I slathered it in wheel bearing grease to help prevent corrosion. We will see how that goes though!

Had alot of fun. It took me about 5 hrs to do it all including doing some Jaguar forums searching and trying to find a replacement radiator for a decent price. I would definitely do it again now that I have a game plan!

Thanks!

Gotta love that Texas "jacked in the back" look ... even if it is only temporary

As the saying goes, I feel your pain. I ran into the shock bolt problem on the right front of my VDP while changing shocks. I also made use of the cut off wheel but ended up cutting the bolt. Four new shocks now and all is well.
