Default "sealed for life"

I know the question answers itself and ive heard differing stories but i'm looking for the definitive answer so here goes:1998 4.0l xj8,I know that this year was a "one off" year regarding the transmission, i,e sealed for life, cant change the fluid, etc but I wondered if anyone had managed it?
the car is on 109,000 miles and so far no problems but id like to keep it that way if possible !!!
if it cant be serviced how about replacement with one that can, xjr for example?

The ZF 5HP24 transmission can be very easily serviced and I believe that you can only extend its life by doing so.

Look under 'Transmissions' at this link for all you need to know on the subject:

Thanks for your prompt reply TP, so in effect the procedure is drain gearbox, remove sump and change filter, refit sump, remove level plug and refill with correct fluid (while engine is running?) until it stops overflowing, refit level plug.

if thats wrong please let me know before I do something wrong

That is about it except that you left out a couple details. You would be well served by having someone else move the shift leaver through the gears, s l o w l y, with the engine running, while you fill the transmission as the fill-to-overflowing must be accomplished before the transmission pan exceeds 120 degrees, i.e.; You gotta be able to hold you hand on the bottom of the pan.

Hope you read about the fact that I do not believe that the magically Jaguar transmission fluid is indeed magical.
