Default Squeaking - engine

Since I added the oil stabilizer to my engine I no longer get the ticking sound which really pleased me. However when I start the engine there seems to be a squeaking from the front of the engine. When I spray the cogs that the serpentine belt wraps around the squeak goes away. I find that I am having to spray the cogs every morning with WD 40 and the noise goes straight away - any ideas?

LOL, +1 to what Brutal said.

Make sure your belt is still around them tight. The cause is likely slippage of it over the pulleys. Make sure your tensioners are good.

Try a few dabs of di-electric grease on the insides of the belts. The chirping will go away.

Why would anyone want to make their drive belts slippery using grease on them? Belts are designed not to slip. If they are making noise, it's time to adjust the tension or to replace the belt/belts.

I had this same problem and it wasn’t a belt issue. They had to replace the tensioner pulley.

Jag actually has a tech bulletin on this. It recommends replacement of the tensioner due to mis-alignment. Of course that is if the belt is in good shape.

As for the grease on the belt....My dad used to use VO5 on his XK120 to kill the squeal.

Myole' 98 XJ8does the same thing now since it's getting cold outside, belt squeaks(not very loud and not on every rotationbut still there)a bit until it's heated up then vanishes so i'm assuming it's probably not the pulley, but neverknow we shall see whenbelt replaced. As well I don't drive it much anymore dunno if that could contribute. I scored a Dayco Serpentine Belt (DAYCO Part # 5070915) onsale for $25 shipped and will be putting it on soon, hopefully that does it. If not tensioner pulley will be next I see them new for $100 shippedif you look around

Default Help on engine belt squeak

Hi Gang,
New to the forums. Thanks to the wealth of info here I've just done an upper tensioner replacement and aluminum thermostat housing. Now I only have the belt squeak to cure, and the headrest problem. I either have, or have fixed all of the major problems listed for a 2001 XK8.

Can anyone confirm if the cold intermittent engine belt squeak is the idler pulley, or the belt tension pulley? Can these be re-aligned or lubed? I would like to take a stab at fixing these before random replacement of parts.

Thanks for the great info Jag dudes.

For what it is worth, I have changed out all the pulleys, tensioners, and belts on two XJRs and recommend that you do the whole works every 60k miles or so. When you change them in advance it saves you the pain of getting a tow truck, and the damage that comes with towing the car. Also when the belt breaks it can damage the fans and shroud, and takes hours to unravel from the crank pulley. It is preventive maintenance in my view. My sister thinks nothing of going to the LEXUS dealer and dropping a couple of grand every 60 thousand miles for "preventative mantenance." I think all the pulleys, tensioners and belts cost me about $400 dollars, and took about two hours to do, including eating lunch.

@ redcat

This was such an annoyance for me it about made me sell the car hah. To have such a fancy ride and have it chirp and squeal like a banshee down the road and at idle, that's just sad hah. Anyways.. I got it all straightened out. Check me and Gus's thread here.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...t=29520&page=5

It's probably all the pulleys and possibly the belt. I changed my belt 3 times with no change. For my situation it turned out to be my tensioner/idler pulley, and mine were brand new jag parts. I had belt walk and squeal.

I suggest saying "F" the jag pulleys, as they are way overpriced (about $70-100 each), without lips, and like me MIGHT not even be your problem! Then you're stuck with $200 worth of pulleys you don't need.

Get these for replacement of your idler/tensioner pulleys. I seriously doubt you need the whole tensioner assembly, just get two DAYCO $14 pulleys first and try that. For $30 you can't go wrong. They are the same diameter as the jag parts. Put one for idler and one for Tensioner pulley. I bet it stops your squealy bs, it did mine. For $30 you can't go wrong.

DAYCO Part # 89003

http://www.amazon.com/Dayco-89003-Te.../dp/B000C0YR0M

http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,cata...yco_89003.html

Now if you HAVE to have Jaguar Parts hah, I've got 3 VERY lightly used Jaguar METAL Idler Pulleys *can be put in Tensioner spot as well* They're very clean and all under 6k miles of usage.

I will sell you or anyone interested for $20 each, compared to $70-$100 each. Perfect condition, I just don't need them. My problem was belt walk on cold start as you can see I needed something with a lip.

1 has only 100 miles if that, rubber is still over the steel. (tensioner pulley)
2 have about 5k miles on each. Very low mileage

Default Caution on pulleys!

Got the new serpentine belt and the 2 DAYCO pulleys mentioned above. While the idler pulley fit perfect, the same cannot be said for the tensioner pulley.

I've got a 2001 XK8 and the Dayco pulley will rub its polymer 'spokes' against the tensioner (Jag #NCA7739AD). It does NOT fit the same as the metal stock pulley. SO....if anyone needs one of these DAYCO pulleys for the idler...I have one brand new in box for $13 including shipping. Send me a message.

Caution! The bolt on the tensioner pulley is left hand thread! Ask me how I know...

I found that the hard way also. I too have an extra Dayco pulley, works great on the idler.

I'll add, when I tried to get just the pulley for the tensioner, I had to buy the entire assembly...I wasn't taking the chance I'd get the wrong dimensioned one again, and be without the car.

How did you solve that pulley issue redcat?

Have not solved the tensioner pulley issue...looking for a good price on the tensioner assembly. H2Oboy - Can you tell me where you bought your belt tensioner?

Fortunately I have a backup car and can let this sit for a week.
