Default Strange Brake Noise '02 XJ8

I have had a strange noise when braking since the purchase of our '02 XJ8. Immediately I ordered new pads and rotors as that's the sound it makes... Almost like metal on metal when braking. I replaced the rotors and pads... The original pads looked like they could have gone another 20K. Now I will be taking it to an independent mech tomorrow. I have no idea what it could be. You know when the "Dark Lord" is defeated in the Lord of the Rings first film? It makes a strange sound like a huge generator powering down when braking at any speed. All looks good by the eye. Has anyone experienced this problem? Thanks for your help.

I'm inclined to think wheel bearings.

I agree. Sounds like possible wheel bearing. But.....you neglected to say if the new pads and rotors changed anything?

Yep! Wheel bearings! The tech said it was the front left. I am going to have both front left and right taken care of though. I will have to remove the hub assys myself and have the bearings pressed on. $85 per hr at 5 hours is just too much for me right now! HadI waited a bit I would have learned the same thing here and saved about $100 (just because I can afford a Jag doesn't mean I can affordthe shop maintenance)! So I am a do-it-yourselfer. Thanks again for your input. The new pads and rotors didin't change a thing. It'sjust really strange because thereare no other symptoms of bad bearings. I will post the outcome! David
