Default Sunroof buttons to show error codes

I have an 2000 XJ8 with a sunroof and I recently discovered that I can use the buttons to display information on the dashboard. The close button shows the VIN, the open button displays errors (brake fluid low, etc.). This only works with the ignition key in the first position, in the other positions the roof will obviously open or close.

Does anyone know more about this feature? I never seen it documented somewhere.

1st position means just in the lock or with aux on? My sunroof open and closes on 1 and 2 unless 1 is in your case just in the lock and not turned!?

I mean the key in the lock position or even not in place at all. I'll see if I can make a video.

Edit:

Strange. I just tried, my 1998 does not do that, either with the key in position 1 or out of the ignition.

Hi Jetze,

That is a very interesting feature! I just tried our '03 U.S.-spec XJ8 and it does not display the VIN or any flagged faults as yours does. I wonder if this was a dealer-selectable feature that could be enabled with IDS/WDS/SDD?

Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

Cheers,

Don

'03 US-spec XJR and nothing on my end either. Was hoping to have a new trick to show off, but not meant to be.
