Default The switch to LEDs

The transformation to better lighting is nearly complete. I chose SuperBright LEDs for the task. Other than the high mount stop light (which is crumbling apart, difficult to remove, and will likely be replaced), the job was straightforward. Door courtesy bulbs were an easy task, and shine on the ground much better:

The rear interior lights were a little tricky because the lenses are brittle, and tight space for large hands:

The maps lights required removing the overhead console, not difficult:

The boot lights were a little trickier because the bulb lenght is very short. Yhe first couple bulbs would not fit in the housing, but, I found a shorter bulb. The housings dont seem to click back into place, so I will use a little silicone to set them back in:

The license lamps were straightforward, and make a big difference:

The rear lights (brake/stop, turn, fog, running) were a challenge ( I didnt know how the fog lights worked). I used Canbus bulbs and still get "check rear lights" on display, but, I can live with that:

The pilot lights, up front, were a pain. The little arms you twist to remove just snapped off. Brittle pieces. So getting my hands in there was a challenge:

Side marker housings were brittle also :

I got LED fogs lights also, but, one didnt work (I even switched polarity), so Im waiting on replacements. When thise are in, I will post photos. I also purchased a new undershield because mine was missing.
I am pleased with the outcome.

Don't people use e39 bmw bulb holders for the low and high beam hid&led retro fits? Looks good! Did the same to my car. Have the hid headlight kit sitting, waiting to be installed. But, need to get the proper holders. Easily one of my favorite mods to do on cars-upgrade the lighting.

not sure about the bmw holders, if they work or not. You are talking about the wire ones? I would like to know as well.

I found on here from a 7 year old post to use e46 adapters. Cant find it now. They were cheap enough, so I ordered some and will report back if they fit.

nice, Do you have link where you got all of the LEDs. I have the license plate LED bulb and every time I got it and a little too short in length and got loose.

https://www.superbrightleds.com/. I did have to bend the license plate lamp pins in slightly, to ensure a tighter fit. Just a little.

Hey guys, this looks amazing!

Can you maybe post a link to the LED you are using for each of these replacements? I'd love to do some of them (the easier ones!).

Thanks again for sharing!

The BMW E46 adapters for hid/led headlamps will NOT work. So, I opted for higher wattage bulbs, Hella 100wtb, and put led driving/fog lamps in.

These are H7 adapters. They sit mostly snug in the headlight itself. But my HID bulb doesn't slide all the way down. What am i doing wrong here?

I went through various old threads before asking.

Don't you get error message on the info screen under the speedo because they are pulling less wattage?

This may not look very professional from the backside of the headlamps but, it works very well. The same ones I installed about 3 years ago on my daughters XJR are still going good today. If you zoom in, you’ll notice that I used a zip tie. I had to remove each headlamp to successfully install the bulbs but, no glue was involved.

I know this isn’t a good sense of comparison but, they are a bright white bulb. I have them as a low and high beam. In this photo is pictured only the low beams and the inner little peanut bulb is a bright white. I can tell you that they’re plenty bright enough but I don’t get flashed from other drivers as if my high beams are on so it’s not too overwhelming.
