Default Tail light issues / Fault Codes

Hi,

To take my mind of the never ending rust battle on my 87 Series 3 XJ6 I've taken stewardship of my father-in-laws 2001 XJ Executive 3.2 which has only done 75,000 miles but has been off-road for the past 2 years as he's bought an XF. He was going to scrap it but I couldn't bear to see that happen and am sorting through various issues now.

Welding-wise, I've had a good prod round and it needs a small patch at the n/s/f sill (inner looks fine) and another small patch where the floorpan meets the sill on the drivers side. Bar a bit of scabbing on the o/s/r arch and the same on the n/s/f, I can't find anything else right now but these xj's have a nasty habit of hiding it well so am expecting more somewhere down the line.

Anyway - I digress. The tail lights at the rear don't work (am getting the check rear lights message) although the brake / reverse lights do. Bulbs are fine so I need to start hunting for a break somewhere but can't seem to find a wiring diagram anywhere - just wondered if anyone knew where I could lay my hands on one at all? My knowledge of the electrics on this model is a bit sketchy but in basic terms I think the power comes from the switch, via the body processor unit to the rear light cluster?

Another problem is the abs / tracs / gearbox fault messages with a variety of codes thrown up which seem to change every time I clear them with a scanner. The battery voltage isn't all that at just under 12 volts and the battery earth looks a bit scabby so will change those first before pursuing any other lines as from memory of owning one of these previously, a less than tip-top battery can throw up all sorts of problems.

Any thoughts / help much appreciated.

Thanks - Mike.

For rusty spots have a look at my thread...
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...onsider-59153/

Oxidization of the bulb and connector can give this warning, check the bulbs are good? Got a meter reading on the lamp housing sockets? A spray with WD40 and remove and refit a few times, maybe even clean the contacts with wire wool/solder brush.
Do your front side lights and headlights work?

Here's a wiring book for the car...

And your battery voltage is waaaay too low - it needs to be 12.5+ for the cars systems to be happy, or you will get the ghosts in the machine in false warnings like the TRAC/ABS/STAB. New battery or full charge required before any more 'fixing'.
Hope this helps.

Under 12V is dead and causes false codes.
