I’m pretty sure they are, but wanted some expert opinions. XJR with 1/01 build date. Looks like plastic on top and metal runners. I have this engine for sale in Marketplace and eBay. Was hoping to post had third generation, but at least I can show in good shape.
If you update this engine to third, would you change the runners?
Is just doing just the tops much simpler?

 

Those are first generation tensioners that are prone to failure.

This engine is going to require the primary and secondary timing chains, tensioners and guides to be replaced as the lower guides are most likely cracked with pieces falling into the sump.

 

they call those second gen secondaries because there’s a spring in it.

slap some ebay secondaries in there and it’s somebody else’s problem.

 

Look like first gen, either way they need to be replaced. If the buyer is that hung up on it just go ahead and throw secondaries in it, they're cheap. Id' think if they were buying the engine they wouldn't mind doing the work themselves anyway but you never know. Good luck.

 

I believe I would replace then and add the expense to the sale price, stating same.
People love it when they see needed work already and newly performed.

 

Particularly if there's detailed images & oe parts receipt. With cam locking tool or zip tie and a day's work it's a job well done and certainly 'value added'.
There's definitely going to be bits of plastic timing parts in the timing cover bedplate area, always is with those things...it's like russian roulette with each startup, and 21 years old.
