Default Ticking sound XJ8

Hi guys,

I have a jaguar xj8 1998. When i start the car i hear a ticking sound in the engine. If i rev the car a bit then the sound stops. Do you have any ideas what that might be? is that serious?

Thank you!

Does the ticking sound go away after a few minutes, or when the engine is fully warmed up?

My “98” does the same thing. I believe it may be the variable valve timing solenoid. Some suggest that using a heavier engine oil solves the ticking at startup, but as I understand, it is not serious.

Difficult to diagnose without actually hearing the noise, but I'm thinking "ticking" is more likely a cold cam/bucket noise, or maybe a VVT noise, than a timing chain slap, which I'm thinking would be more of a "clatter" than a "ticking". The timing cover tends to amplify noise, so that also would be a determining factor if the noise seemed to be emanating from there,............ "being there" and able to hear the sound would help a lot.

I would try a higher viscosity oil (I use 10w-40 GTX as a matter of course) which may help if it is a VVT problem. Not sure if that would help with a tappet problem.....maybe? And if the tensioners/chains have not been replaced yet, I would definitely put that on my bucket list.

If the "ticking" goes away after just a few minutes after start-up, I wouldn't be too concerned. I would do an oil change with a 10w-40W and see if that made any difference.

Will be interested to hear what transpires L.cd.

Default 2003 XJ8 308 ticking

Hi,

Saw this thread. A car I checked out has a similar issue.

I attached a video with the clicking noise. The car should have the aluminum tensioner being that it is an 03.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
