Hey,
Just finished replacing the timing chains. Engine sounds fine at RPM's, so I don't think the chain replacement was done wrong, but it won't idle. Also getting "Restricted Performance". Any ideas?

 

OK, so what model and year? There are differences!
BTW, there is probably a major vacuum leak either in the intake plenum or the engine case.

 

Thanks for your quick reply. 2000 VDP, 94k miles. Buy the way, my son thought he heard a hissing sound after we started it.

 

Find the hiss, find the miss! Look at the part load and full load breather tubes carefully for splits. Check the plenum and it's joints. If you can hear it, you should be able to find it. Some folks use a piece of tubing stuck in their ear, stethoscope style and run the other end along the engine to listen for the leak.

 

When I put mine back together, I forgot to plug in the MAF sensor connector, same symptoms. Something is not hooked up or hooked up wrong or you have a vacuum leak as was said.
