Default Trans noise

I have a 2002 XJ8 only when cold start up and driving does the trans make a whine/spinning sound. I think its the trans. Has been doing it for like 5000 miles. After 2 miles of driving it goes away. Any thoughts?

My '98 VDP does it too. Not sure if it goes away after it warms up or if I just get used to it, I read threads on this forum about low transmission fluid level causing the pump to "cavitate" , however it's a real pain to check the level correctly.

Have you changed the fluid and filter yet? It could get expensive if you do the proper maintenance.

You definitely need to check the fluid level, and check for signs of fluid leakage. I'll attach one of the Jaguar documents that describes the procedure. As RJ recommended, you really should plan on dropping the oil pan and changing the filter, and it might be prudent to also install the Transgo revised pressure regulator valve kit, since the pressure regulator is a known issue on the ZF 5HP24 transmission that can lead to A-drum failure.

Transgo 5HP-24-PR Kit

Correct fluids for your transmission that I have been able to confirm include:

ZF Lifeguard 5
ESSO LT 71141
Mobil LT 71141
Febi Bilstein Automatikgetriebeöl (ATF) nr. 29738
Pentosin ATF 1
Ravenol ATF 4/5 HP

Automaker-branded packaging of ESSO LT 71141:
Jaguar JLM 20238
BMW 8322 9407807
BMW 3 22 2 220 442
BMW ATF 71141
BMW LA 2634
BMW ATF-1
BMW ATF-4
Citroen Z 000169756
Mercedes Benz A 0019892203
Mercedes-Benz 236.11
Peugeot Z 000169756
Porsche 999.917.547.00
VW/Audi G 052 162 A1 / A2 / A6
VW LT 71141

The best price I have been able to find on any of these is on the Febi, from various eBay sellers, at just under $50 per 5 liter jug with free shipping.

The longer you avoid this necessary maintenance, the more likely you will need a serious transmission repair in the possibly near future.

Cheers,

Don
