The type of fluid and instructions to check and fill should be on the transmission pan, under your car. I'm not sure what kind of fluid a '03 S-Type 4.0, but it should be a Mercon fluid, just depends on what specs.

My '01 S-Type's 5R55N transmission takes Mercon V. Check on your transmission pan to make sure.

ZF life gaurd 6 is the correct oil for the 03 onwards models ; running the 6HP26 6 speed trans.
although there are other compatible fluids out there .
both jaguar and ZF will tell you there is not . mine is running fine on a total brand equivalent.

If it's a 4.0 - and be sure to check - it'll have the 5R55N trans, which uses cheap fluid.

It's critical you check what engine it has. You can even look up the car by VIN on FordEtis home page to see.

I thought '03 was the first year for the ZF 6 speed.
With that trans, the purists will tell you to get the ZF Lifegaurd 6 fluid.
I, however, chose Ford's Mercon SP fluid. I ran that for over 10k before I sold it.
It had the lurch before and after. Otherwise, drove the same.

Here is a post on British forum about the oil for the gearbox. They have found cheaper oils which are the correct specifications and cheaper.

You in the US, look for Ford Mercon SP,was made for the lincoln Navigator with the same transmission. You can get it for around $6 a quart at most auto parts stores, but will have to order it. Now Ford has supposedly changed that to a newer specification and I haven't read where it's compatible, so look for Mercon SP.

I don't believe there any purists here in the S Type family, especially when comes to finding alternate spec'd oil for these ZF boxes!
