Default Transmission failed at less than 92000 miles

After leaving the gym this morning, the car would not move in gear. Just revved up then went BANG into gear. The dreaded TRANSMISSION FAULT light came on and I knew from reading posts that I was doomed. Made it home and the tow truck is on it's way to pick up the car. From what I've found the problem most likely is the forward drum/clutch, a known weak part in the unit.

Sure sucks

The transmission shop just called. Their tech drove the car and scanned the codes. Transmission is shot. Fluid is dark brown. Going to be rebuilt. $4800 plus tax. Do they make an improved drum? If so I would like to convey that to the shop

Thanks

I think all the replacement drums are the improved type. They will probably replace the valve body also, at least I hope so for that price.

That is high. Check around for rebuilt transmission. I spent $2,600 installed a few years ago. The A drum does have an improved part. You also want to change the solenoids in the valve body. If they stick it can do bad things due to high internal pressure. Good luck. Fix it and press on.

I found a tech bulletin from ZF that describes the problem, the needed fixes, and associated part numbers. I'm going to stop by tomorrow and give them the info.

I had same problem

The price you were quoted was extremely high

I had mine done for about 2,600 two and a half years ago - I live in northern NJ - near NYC - pretty darn expensive

I would shop price - if you can
