Transmission fluid XJ8 1998
This is a pretty basic question and to many seems stupid, but:
Does the 1998 XJ8 have separate transmission fluid and a transmission fluid dip stick as per most American cars or is it all with the engine oil and dipstick. My manual doesn't mention transmission fluid under regular checks. Believe it or not I'm not completely syupid (unless you ask my wife) and just don't have a local garage to ask some of these questions. When they publish 'Jaguars for dummies' sign me up.
Thanks,
Michigan

if you have a supercharged engine, then there is a tube for the transmission oil, but no dip-stick, this can be bought from jaguar ,
if you have a N/A engine, then no you dont have a dip-stick for the transmission, and no, the engine oil one doesn't do both jobs
the N/A car and supercharged cars have different make transmissions.....

I'm not sure if I'm developing transmission problems or not. Last day or two heard a humming from front, now that I have tested more thoroughly (ie without the radio on) I think it might be more front wheel related (bearing?) the hum is wheel RPM related, not present in Neutral revving and doesn't change with auto gear change. I can feel it through the steering wheel, doesn't appear to be brake related, tire pressures correct. I noticed some oil spots on garage floor and will jack up car tomorrow to look where they are coming from but oil level OK, hence my search and question about transmission levels to try and check that out, I will look at colour of drips tomorrow. The hum doesn't seem to change on turning corners but definitely slows and stops when coming to a halt. No codes or warning lights on.
Thanks for your help,

To check front bearing, jack up vehicle at front, safely.
Grab the wheel at 12 & 6 oclock. If the is any forward and back play, bad bearng.
You said tire pressure ok. What about condition of tires? Any unusual wear? Do they feel choppy with your hand?

if you are sensitive to noises... the bearing may not move much when you first detect the noise. Dont give up though, the noise will get worse and eventually the wheel will rock like crazy.. haha.. it is worth checking every couple of tanks of gas, or every few weeks until you find the noise.

Turns out it was the front drivers side wheel bearing. All nicely rusted/seized in. Got to it before it locked up and replaced it. All now well except for all the pot holes on the Michigan roads.
Thanks for the advice.
