Transmission hasitating at 40mph
Hello guys my other xj8 was fine but I parked the car in garage for about 2 months I started like once a week let idle for 15 minutes and turned off yesterday I drove the car I could hear weird noise while shifting it was worse if I shift and higher rpm and cold once the engine reach the normal temperature there was little to no noise while shifting but at 40mph the transmission was hasitating . I'm thinking to drain 3-4 quart and refill I will not open the pan or the filter that killed my previous transmission any suggestions? Could be something else? I used the obd reader and did show air mass sensor code nothing more . 2001 xj8 150k miles
If you don't want to do a full flush (I wrote a thread of how to, incl. which ATF to use) incl. filter change change, I really don't know what to respond... Do you know how to properly check the ATF fluid level and did you? Any leakage?
Are you on your second transmission? If so, how many miles on the transmission?
Try getting the mass airflow sensor sorted. These transmissions rely on engine controls to decrease torque output between shifts. It might be related. Big might though, I don't know enough to say anything for sure.
Doing a fluid change and top up would be my course of action on a 150,000 mile transmission.
As Peter said, any leakage under the car? It's odd that a transmission issue would occur after sitting for a while.
Additionally, could you describe the noise any better? Is is more of a clunk, or a grind, or a whine, or a wail?

If your ECM is adjusting the engine to run too rich this could happen. Misfiring might be something to think about.
Timing could be out a bit. however the most likely issue is a restricted exhaust, such as plugged, damaged or
worn out catalytic converter. I have seen cases where the converter was bad enough to be causing some
performance problems, but not yet quite bad enough to signal an error or a code. A vacuum test can help
confirm whether this is exhaust related.

Randy, did I miss something? Mobile1 is describing transmission issues and you are picking up engine issues? I am a bit confused...
But talking about engine "performance issues": There is a "good one" regarding "exhaust restriction" being demonstrated in the Movie "Beverly Hills Cop": A banana in the exhaust pipe will do it...
