The XJR transmission is the "set for life" version. That said, I would be looking more around the 200,000 km mark to be a good mid-life point. At 81k km, it's barely broken in, so unless you are experiencing issues with it, I wouldn't bother changing it just yet.

The Mercedes Gearbox is easy to service. Look for 722.6, NAG1 or 5A580 gearbox for service info.

A fluid/filter change is always a good idea if the fluid appears dark or smells 'off'.

The transmission was originally sold as sealed for life. However, over the years Mercedes has changed their service interval twice. The first time, it was for one change at 40k miles, then no more. Now they recommend a change every 40k miles.

My XJR had the change done at 58k at a dealership, and I then did it again at 135k miles. The fluid colour itself was not too bad, but there was a thick layer of black sludge at the bottom of the pan.

If yours never got the 40k change, it is due now.

I'd be changing it for piece of mind if nothing else.

Don't forget the "sealed for life" to the manufacturer means "good until the warranty runs out."

After that, it is not THEIR problem.

Change it every 50K miles or so and do the filter every 100K and you should be fine.

The XJR Merc tranny is very easy to service since it has a drain plug, not so easy on the XJ8.

You do need to buy or make a tranny dipstick, cheap on the 'bay, about $10 or less now. The car doesn't come with one.
