Doing a valve adjustment on car is an absolute mind numbing experience unless you have the exact Jaguar service tool. And even then it looks difficult. I did mine when I had the heads off due to a blown head gasket. It was still a ton of time, patience (was all gone half way thru the process) and a coffee can full of bucket shims (not kidding) that somehow didn't have some of which I needed. If I ever have the heads off again, I'm splurging and having the reputable machine shop doing for me.

What you need right now is just your clearances. Turn the crankshaft in a clockwise direction untIl the extended part of the lobes are up on the valves you want to check. Take a feeler gague and then find the clearance between camshaft and the cam bucket. Make a note of the clearance of each. I usally mark them I 1-8 and E1-8 starting from the front of the engine. Save these notes because it will make it easier for your adjustments later.

Do yourself a favor and REMOVE the exhaust cam even if you have the cam lifter depression tool. The intake cam cannot be removed without the front of the engine disassembled.

I borrowed the tool from the tool room when I worked at the Jag dealer and I just gave up and removed the exhaust cam to speed up the repair.

Bob, right now he is not doing the adjustment. He is trying to determine clearances to see if he has a bent valve or dropped a valve seat after overhearing car. He has 0 compression on one cylinder and trying to determine course of action. He started a new thread.

Here is a TSB showing the procedure for the 3.0 V6 but the process is the same for the V8.

The old Fiats, VW Rabbits, Volvos etc. all used the same idea.

You have to devise a way to depress the outer edge of the lifter 'bucket' to gain clearance so the shim can be pulled from between the cam and lifter.

The tool 'catches' the edge of the lifter and the shim is free to slide out. Please ensure that the piston is lower in the cylinder so that the valve does NOT contact the piston!!!!!

I'm going to see if they have that tool as a loaner from auto zone, or if they have a cheap one at harbor freight. If not I may just be pulling the heads and taking them to a mechanic to have them do the valve job.

So anyone got a good how to on removing the heads?

So I've checked the valve clearences and I don't think the car is in need of a valve adjustment, it seems that I've got three stuck valves. Now to pull the heads.

Here are the results of the valve clearances:
