i just checked my W5A580 transmission fluid level and had some quick questions...1) the dipstick would not go all the way in...is that normal?...and 2) the fluid was light brown and smelled fine and it did not smell burnt...is the flyid supposed to be brown or red?...do both of these factors sound right...see attached pics...i couldn't get a good read on the fluid as i think the tranny was too hot...the dipstick indicator was covered with fluid, i noticed a bubble or two so i think it must have been too hot..

 

so is brown tranny fluid in the XJRs' W5A580 transmission bad? should it be pink?

 

Should be redish, but as long as the oil isn´t smellling burned like, it should be ok, no worries. If you want to be sure, just have the oil checked with Blackstone Labs for example.

 

hey thanks avos!...that site looks awesome, i just filled out the form...yes, my fluid smells fine, nothing burnt...i tend to be ultra paranoid about the tranny so i am trying to figure out the best place to get my fluid changed...the dealer scares me a bit as that can be hit or miss...i am also worried that my regular mechanic could make a mistake...
