It is definitely a 3.9 or 4.0.
It has the same coils and dpfe sensor as the Lincoln LS.
There are Ford connectors I recognize all over this thing.
There are no VCT solenoids sticking through the valve cover.
The throttle body points to the RH side of the car.
The oil filter was on the front side of the engine instead on the RH side.
The water outlet is much less bulky than the one I see on my xj.

Is this the engine from an S type or something? Is it swappable into my Vanden Plas?

Thunderbird and LS are the same I believe. I am also under the impression that all thunderbirds and LSs with the 3.9l have vct solenoids coming out of the valve cover, the one I saw doesnt seem to have them.

 

Friend has a 2002 LS 3.9, no VVT solenoid in valve covers.

 

Dude, you are right. 03+ LS and thunderbird do have the VCT solenoids sticking out. I am going to shy away from this engine. I cant believe I drove all the way into FT Worth area to check this out I was like oh yeah thats the right motor, then I started to notice the differences. He didnt care, he was like oh yeah itll swap in. Really, I would love to get rid of the VCT stuff anyway if I could without a CEL, but theres no chance of that, lol.
