This might sound fairly basic, but I have heard a bit of discussion recently about oil filters and them not all being alike internally. I do think there must be some science here; and I tend to take a design/engineering approach to things so to begin with -

other than a Jag dealer purchased oil filter, what is a correct non factory replacement for my 2001 XJR?

Do different manufacturer's filters cause a difference in indicated engine oil pressure?

I always have purchased name brand filters, but is there a real difference, and can some filters lead to oil starvation or bearing damage?

Any technical insight from the membership is much appreciated.

with the german cars - you can normally get the exact same Mann filter from one of the importers --with the Jag I normally get the OE -- you can get in wholesale online .... the interval is so long that I want the OE.

 

I use ac delco currently. Wix makes very good oil filters though. No cardboard construction like a fram or other brands. I change my oil every 3-4000 miles.

Over the years Ihave come across some crap filters.

The list below is made up of filters I have used and trust.
They all have anti-drain back valves and pressure relief valves and have quality construction.

I looked up 2001 XJR oil filters on the rockautoparts.com website:

AC DELCO Part # PF2254 (Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 88997063) $7.52

WIX Part # 51228 {(Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): #PH5618} $10.18

BOSCH Premium Oil Filter Part # 72209 $3.66 (I paid $6.00 at local advance auto parts store) - no longer on their website - autopartswarehouse.com has it for $8.08.

Wix - normally makes a fine filter.

I do not believe Bosch makes any filters - they are rebranded.


It would be interesting to see what the Ford/ Lincoln filter looks like - have not priced it.


The OE filter is quite large and heavy -- I paid $14.36 last year ... I think the drain plug may be close to that price! I believe the OE filter is a UK product - I don't have it in front of me.


Can't see the point in saving a max of $10 on this part.

Jaguar Original Equipment Oil Filter part number is EAZ1354 and retail price is $17.95 discounted down to $13.65 on 2 Jaguar dealership websites.

And yes I agree with yeldogt on the small amount of savings between Jaguar dealership price and the after market oil filters. Too small price difference on something you only change occasionally.

But in my case, I did not want to order online and pay the shipping that amounts to more than the filter's cost. I also did not want to wait 4 to 10 days to get it.
Also the dealership is more than 25 miles each way.

One thing to remember is that when you go to a Ford/ Lincoln dealer you get an OE part - The box will often be Blue -- it may or may not say Motorcraft ... most often not.

The motorcraft parts you buy outside of a Ford dealer are not the same parts -- those in the red/ white box.

My point -- A motorcraft filter from Walmart can and often are different than the filters in the blue box from Ford

 

Mann filters usually get high marks in comparative reviews.

 

Do you have proof of this? The boxes in WalMart are red and white with Motorcraft plastered all over them. If they came in a plain blue box w/o a name, how would the consumer know it's Motorcraft on the shelf in WalMart? Seems more like advertising or marketing for Ford. Ford needs to have parts in boxes at the dealership, but they don't need to advertise.

 

It is not a question of "proof" -- this is what it is.


Got to Ford Dealer get white box with blue lettering -- "Ford Genuine Parts"


Motorcraft is "recommended" by Ford -- go look at the Official Ford Parts website. They are not hiding anything.



Example: Spark plugs wires. The Blue Box will be the exact same as on the vehicle - perfect fitting lengths and ends specific to that vehicle - original quality. The Motorcraft will fit based on the engine family - and based on replacement quality to compete with other after-marketers.

Ford has always had an aftermarket devision that supplies all kind of parts.

 

Understandable with plug wires, etc. I suppose they could do that with oil filters. I've run Motorcraft oil filters in my Powerstroke and they've been great.

 

...... used plug wires as an example -- because you can see the difference.

I have had the same with coils and relays. The brake pads and rotors are different.


The important thing is to understand that you can have a difference -- and the different price for an item may not be the color of the box - but the part inside.


I recently had this happen with a Nissan/ Infinity dealer -- they offered a very low price oil change ... When I asked ... How? They said they don't use the OE filter. I had no idea that Nissan would provide a "bulk" oil filter to the dealers that was different than a standard filter -- but they do and it is a lot lighter ... It must work ... but it is not the same? Black -- no "Nissan" to be found on it ... made in China
