Question What kind of ODB-II reader is needed to see all the codes? Which protocols needed?

I would like to order an ODB2 reader but want to be sure that I am going to be able to read all the data; no big deal to look codes up on the Internet, but I need to be able to retrieve the codes (and reset the check-engine too.)

There are so many protocols, I am lost... Please help!

More than you ever wanted to know about OBDII readers can be found at the top of the General Tech Help sub forum. Here is the direct link:

There is really only one reader that will read ALL the Jaguar codes and still priced within reach of a non-professional shop. That is discussed there also. Most hobby mechanics buy a reader for less than $100 and there are many to choose from.

Yea, I found that in this forum before posting and it is way too much info! Just need to know what protocols are needed to diagnose an XJ8.

Also, not looking to spend much (the $30-50 readers would be ideal...)

Car doesn't look special from that photo. Definitely wouldn't pay a premium just for the low mileage.

That thread is over 8 years old. I don't think your comment is relevant.

Lol, true. BTW, years later and I'm still using the same code reader bought from this thread, have plugged it in to several cars, it's great!
