Those are the updated metal secondary tensioners (as well as the updated morse primary chain)

OBVIOUSLY your engine number is greater than 0108123259.
What is the concern???

The other side will look the same unless a failure has occurred.

What MY car are we discussing???

My 02 Sport. It was built August of 01. My concern? Knowing what tensioners it had. You can never be to sure. Pic of the car just because

The chain between crank and cams is the newer style. So don't bother. Both sides ARE the same. Your engine was built after the change date. Be a very happy man!

Is that primary chain a standard replacement part, or is this a sign that it's actually a later year engine, and possibly a full replacement engine?
Or is that just what you'd expect to see on an engine of the correct build year?

No clue. I'd be curious as well.

The prima chain is actually the best indicator. It was only fitted to the engines with the newest tensioners from the factory.

Weird that my service records indicate my tensioners were done, if my engine already came with the metal ones. But the service record also states "timing chains"

The new ones don't last for ever either. But you get more than the life of the plastic ones. I already have changed a set which were 'dead'

Dumb question, how would we know when the metal ones are done?

You hear the typical chain slack and chatter. Though more so the lower tensioners seem to die prior the upper ones (new style!).

Brandon, I wouldn't be concerned with your engine, it's an AJ27S with morse chains and Gen 3 chain/tensioner layout, it's a super slim chance of anything becoming an issue while you own it - I highly doubt you'll experience the dreaded tensioner issue earlier engines suffered from, your engine has Jaguar's remedies already fitted. Just sleep easy and enjoy.

Thanks for all the info, Daim! So since it has the newer chain, does that mean it still has the plastic primary tensioners? I would think that since the newer chain was put in, they would have changed the primary tensioners if they were plastic. But, you never know until you remove and see.

Will do! I just like learning/knowing about the cars I own. I've learned so much about my 93 vette it's crazy. I love Jags in general, but x308s especially for the sedans. Which is why I ask so many questions on here. Am I seeing a 100 in your avatar?

IIRC yours has the "newer" style primary guides, which are a plastic plate over a metal plate, you can kind of see it in dead center of the second pic where the primary chain goes down towards the crankshaft. Which I believe are the ones that are supposed to be used with your style chain.
