New to me 2000 XJ8.

Both trays on BOTH seat backs don’t lay flat.

What am I missing in the process?

I believe the angle of the seat, when installed, will compensate for the
angle of the tray.

Only the Vanden Plas (LWB) and upper trim level had picnic trays. It’s likely either the hinges aren’t parallel to each other or some other alignment issue. Take a few pix, with them closed and open as far as you can.

It would be preferable to see them at the angle they would be
when that seat is actually installed....Only then can you determine
if the angle is out of whack.

Yes, that seemed to help although unless I move the seat back vertically STRAIGHT, It’s still not “level” and the ground is.

Correct. However the previous owner changed out the seat backs and they are interchangeable with no modifications to the seat frame. No need to cut foam or remove board as offered in another thread. At least, not in the 2000 model year.

You were correct. However, as I mentioned to @Randy S, unless I adjust the seat perfectly vertical, they are still not level. I don’t sit vertical. I admit I have a little gangsta’ lean when I drive the sedan. The 911…. Well, different angle of attack.

BEFORE Picture: The previous owner had installed VDP seatbacks but, the trays were missing. I removed and reinstalled the trays from another set of seatbacks. The trim color on the lower tray didn't match but I can have that professionally shot with matching paint. I couldn't find trays with Oatmeal trim.

The hinges are NOT out of whack but tray still angles

The hinges are NOT out of whack but tray still angles "up"

OCD clearly visible.
