Default X300 (XJ6) vs X308 (XJ8) Grille

I was thinking of adding a bit of chrome to my XJ8 Sport.
So I would like to "upgrade" to a chrome grille surround instead of the black surround that is currently mounted.
X300 grilles are availlable cheap on eBay UK and I was wondering if there's any difference to the X308 model grilles.
In my opinion they look identical !?!

Anybody knows better than me?

TIA!

Cheers,

David

X308's grill is more rounded than X300's . I don't know if it is that as easy as a bolt on .In regards to looking , I think X308 grill is more attractive

I'm almost certain that the flanges of the hood are squarer on the X300. Not sure. Anyway, most people are looking to do the opposite of you. Lol! They want the painted surround. Chrome, imo, isn't aging well on XJs. Especially not 1990s Vanden Plas.

Having spent a lot of time screwing around with grill fitment, I can say that a "bolt on" will likely not be the case. I took a long time getting the gap widths to spec. An that's with a factory surround! Like you, I've traded the painted slats for mesh. Cost me 115.00! Installed myself. They make the car look better.

In fact, within a week or so, I'll have a very similar set-up to you. XJR-100 tips are awaiting install. (hispeed42, what a guy, gave me his) I recommend sticking with the painted grill surround though. Much more modern, and fitting with our cars' Sport aesthetic.

P.S., chromed plastic, to me, is far worse than painted plastic anyway, in my mind.

Cheers!

Ian

Hi Ian,

I got myself a XJ8 chrome grille with black inserts off eBay UK for 17 GBP shipped!

I think it will match the chrome side-window-surrounds better than the black one.
(I won't keep the mesh either.)

And if I should change my mind I can always swap grills again.

Cheers,

David

I have a Chrome X308 Grill surround with the Factory mesh inserts, it looks lovely. I have the chrome slats also, but the mesh looks well. And it was all free

I will mount the black inserts.
Was inspired by wildcard's beautiful Jag...

Good deal! 17 pounds is great. Hope you're happy with the outcome! I'm sure you won't have too much trouble with the install. Once you have dealt with it before it becomes easier.
