x308 3.2 starting problem 1998
Will not go to tickover, dies after 1-2 seconds. I have a full tank and pressure in fuel rail.
Constant motor type noise from top of engine with ignition on. Is this normal?

Welcome cnimike, we would appreciate it if you introduce yourself and your Jag here.... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/ ...please review the forum rules and come on back to see what can be done about your situation.
For your situation, we need a bit better description. Since we don't know where your from, I have no clue what a tickover is? What do you mean by constant motor type noises? Mine with a supercharger makes different noises than a basic motor. So if you can help with that description some more, we can hopefully help with a response.

Hello Highhorse,
Sorry that I didn't realise this was a US forum or I would have translated my comments. What you call idling is what we call tickover in Britain.
I've traced the noise from the top of the engine to the throttle body motor. It is a little more noisy than my supercharged V8, but I don't think it is an issue now.
After I had spent some time checking vacuum pipes on the throttle body and re-seated the air intake pipe from the MAF, it started fine from cold, EM light went out and drove OK. After half an hour of test driving with no problems I turned it off and went for a coffee. When I came back out 20 minutes later, it wouldn't start again. When I turn the key it fires and then cuts out after about a second. Every time I turn the key, same thing. When left for 5 hours to cool, it started instantly again and EM light goes out. I guess that smooth running once it has started rules out problems with throttle body, fuel pump and relay?

Its actually a world forum, go to the top left task bar, move your mouse over Forums, it will drop down automatically, move the mouse over General Jaguar Forum you'll see Regional...prompt that.
I'm surprised someone from the British contingent didn't jump in sooner to explain that to me...thanks.
Here's a thread to review, its the X300, but just review it and see if that seems similar, because its what I was going to tell you to check.... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-start-156999/ ...try cleaning it first.

There is a problem with early car's mapping and an issue called bore wash. It's well known, lots of threads and most advise not to run the engine for short trips then shut it off and try a restart - this is where the problem stems - on startup petrol washes the oil film from the bores leading to no compression and a non start. Jaguar had a reflash of the ecu to fix this.
But the workaround seems to be running the car up to temp before trips.
