It is my understanding that not all X308 trannys are the same. That the XJR transmission is not the same as the XJ8 transmission. So, having previously heard of X308 transmission problems, is it the XJ8 with the problem, or the XJR, or do both cars have similar transmission problems? Understanding that it tends to happen up closer, or past the 100,000 miles.

XJ8s have the BMW ZF 5HP which is the one people love to malign(A-drum failure etc.), although I've never experienced any issues w/ mine. XJRs have a Benz unit the W5A580.

 

Yes, that's the one problem that I've heard of before, the A-drum failure. So then, I gather that my 2002 XJR has the Benz tranny and NO A-drum problems. Cool.

2001-2003 have the Mercedes transmission which are pretty much indestructible.
