Unhappy XJ Sport v8 1998 non starter

hi i have a 1998 jaguar xj sport 3.2 v8 it was running when i bought it quite well battery was on its way out so i took it off for charging. when i put it back on it would turn over but would'nt start after talking on here i was advised to remove the plugs as it sounded like it was flooded. i replaced the plugs with new ones did not realise they were so expensive anyway back to my story after everything was back together same thing turning but not starting then the airbox blew apart. after leaving car for a week hols. i sourced a new airbox refitted everything same problem this time it blew the airbox and snorkel any ideas anyone would be very much appreciated thanks

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X308 forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

Need to clean the part load breather? Starting issue may be bore wash.

+1 Bore Wash is the most likely problem. Follow this procedure and it is the least painful way to get it started.
First press the accelerator all the way down and hold it there. This shuts off fuel to the injectors.
Next turn the key to start the car and crank for 5 seconds. Do not release the pedal from the floor. Stop and then repeat cranking for 5 seconds stopping and doing it for 5 or 6 times.
Last, crank the car like you would to start it as you are cranking slowly release the pedal from the floor. If it fails to start repeat the steps above. Depending on how much fuel washed away the oil seal you may have to repeat a couple of times BUT it will start if there are no other problems.

All good advice and I'll add that removing a set of plugs - drivers side easiest - add a teaspoon of engine oil down the bores, this helps with adding a bit of compression, clean the plugs and let any fuel to gas off then repeat the fully depressed pedal start. It'll be smokey for a few moments but it should start and run. To avoid bore wash in the future, avoid short runs, the engine needs to be fully up to temperature before shutting off.
A new battery would really help with this too, I know plugs can be pricey but that's what running a Jaguar can be about, as things wear out!

To avoid the pressure blows search for 'full and part load breather clean' in the how to section - there should be an article on cleaning these 2, a very simple job you can carry out in 5 minutes.
