Default XJ8 2001 No Heater and Cooling Fans not operating

My heater is not working and the cooling fans do not seem to operate. I've had the fans removed and they operate when directly connected to a battery. Is there a wiring diagram anywhere, I have checked all the fuses.

I think you have 2 separate problems.
1st, The fans receive all of their instructions from the fan control module. You can follow the wires back to the module. The module receives directions from the ECU and the coolant temperature sensor.
Start the engine and warm it up to temperature. Turn the a/c system on high manually by lowering the temperature to the low setting. The the fans should then automatically come on in high mode because the ECU has bypassed the temp sensor and directed the module to run high to keep A/C running properly. If the fans do not come on the most likely cause is a bad fan control module. If they do come on them the culprit is most likely a bad temperature sensor.
2nd, No heat. Try manually taking the temperature to the highset setting and turning the blower manually up to high. With the engine at temperature do you now have heat? If you do then the ambient air temperature sensor is bad.
Try a few of the test first and report back and we can try to help more from the results. The no heat could be blend door or other controls.

+1, pls. follow the instructions from Avern.
The no-heat can also be caused by a stuck heater core, very common on the x308.
Not too difficult to fix while you will be in there.

Default Thanks All so far

Many Thanks - I think as Avern has mentioned there are 2 issues. I checked the cooling fan after driving to work this morning. With the engine running the fan works, but does not continue after I switch off, I'm sure it used to do it - should it if the engine is warm?

I will check the heater issue on my way home.

The fan only runs after the engine is shut off on HOT days. Cool days it stops immediately. If you are using and needing heat, then it is cold enough the fan won't be
running after turning off the motor. I am not sure what the official limits are, but at 95 degrees they run and at 60 they don't run after shutting the motor off. Your fan is probably ok. Ebay has some ELM 327 obd code readers that work with your cell phone. They will display the coolant temperature on you cell phone. Handy for checking coolant temp while driving.

The heater has an aux pump that goes bad, the valve manifold to direct water to the heater core sticks sometimes. The heater core itself can get clogged. I found a rebuilt
aux pump on ebay. (This stuff is located on the left side near the firewall).
