xj8 4.0ltr..stuck in P
can any one help, my 1997 has been sat on my drive for 3 years..she was fine going into D as i have been testing the gears for most of the 3 years, but now she wont shift from P. i can shift from p into by using the manual override and the beep kick in and i can start her in N. but as soon i put her in P..then she is stuck
Yes it does go in D and R and all other gears and I can drive the car, but I can only do that by selecting the gears by using the gear shift interlock manual override. As soon as I put her back in P and then I cant move the selector without using the override.
I have checked and cleaned all four breaks.

Check the brake lights. The brake switch should cause the shifter solenoid to "clunk" when you step on the brake. Does that happen?
Also check fuse #12, LH heelboard, also fuses 5 and 7, same fuse box.

In that case the most likely culprit is the brake switch itself. JTIS says it's "adjacent to the brake pedal mounting assembly".
