This started about a week ago: when I open or close the door on my 1999 XJ8 I get a very loud CRACK sound at each point where the detent mechanism would hold the door open, two in total. Definitely coming from within the door and you can see the mechanism vibrate each time it happens It is worse when opening the door than closing.

We just had the same problem 2 days ago. Driver door making crack noise at both door position stops (holds door open half and fully).

Yesterday door stopped making noise when opening or closing, but now door swings open without holding position (same with closing - just swings shut).

Will have to investigate tomorrow by removing door panel to see if the metal around the door check arm has done any damage to where it is attached to the door.

if yyou don't keep them greased they will freeze up and pop and break the metal skin on the door that holds them in place. This happened to mine so I had to use the same fix up above. Took the door panel off and took the detent off. I had to push and bend the metal back in place where it had pulled thru the door skin and used large washers on the inside of the door skin to hold the detent bolts and piece in place. Re-installed and greased. Works great.
