XJ8 Intermittent no start

When I try to start my 1998 XJ8, I often have to operate the ignition switch 2 or 3 times before the starter circuit engages. I suspect the starter relay may be the culprit - but I don't know where to look for it.
Does this sound likely? If so, where can I find the relay.
Thanks

Thanks for the responses.
Removed and cleaned the battery terminals - they are bright, and firmly secured.
The battery is strong and fully charged.
The bulkhead stud is clean and solid - no sign of corrosion, and no movement whatever.
Unfortunately I only have one key, although I've ordered a second and will have it cloned from my existing key.
I noticed a few months ago that sometimes when I turned the key to the crank position the dash lights would go out, and there would be no response from the starter circuit. Usually, if I turned the key off, and turned to crank again, it would start normally.
In the last few weeks I've found that I sometimes need to go through this routine 3, 4, or 5 times before the car will start normally.
The car has been babied, and has only 47000 miles, so I suspect the starter is probably OK.
From searching the forum, I gather that the transponder ring in the ignition switch is a possible culprit. Is it possible to jump out, or otherwise deactivate the transponder system to check whether this is the problem?
What about the key itself? I believe it is a microchip system, and would have thought that the chip would be either good, or not. Is that the case?
Thanks for any help.
