Default XJ8 Navigation unit.

Has anyone installed the Jaguar Navigation unit in a 2001 to 2003 XJ8. I see the radio has a "NAV" button and there is a boot/trunk mount navigation unit just above the disk player. What is involved, is it plug and play?

What year Nav unit are you speaking of....same model era? If your speaking of the x308 era, it is simply not worth it....the system is woefully outdated. Your better off with a 3rd party radio with one (like mine) or using a window mount unit....both are superior in all forms. The new head units are all in one, color, larger screen and capable of 10+ times the functions, including Bluetooth for the phone for that new GA law.
Here is the thread of my updated head unit a few years back, albeit it was already in, this is with the new fascia install... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...5/#post1491946

Agree with the above, 20th century tech vs our latest mobile tech renders it obsolete, sucker mount and phone (google maps) for me.

If you want to do it for completeness, you'll need the bracket & a region disc with the DVD player, bolt on and plug and play from that point of view.

I have NAV in my 2001 XJ8. It works but is basically USELESS. The DVD is 17 years old and many streets/highways changed.
The display is just black segments in the radio head unit and mostly VOICE guided. My old TOM TOM works better.

.

Ditto on all that, I have the complete OEM NAV system, it may have been hi-tech in 2001 but is beyond antiquated now.

A cheap Tom Tom or Magellan unit beats it hands down.

Thanks, I guess I will keep the Garmin on the dash. Looking to replace my wife's 99 XJ8L with a newer 2002 or 03 XJ8 and was wondering if the factory nav should be of any added value.

The XK8 has a more useful display than the XJ8. The dash mounted screen in the XK can be replaced with a modern one the same size and all sorts of things can be added like reverse camera, blue-tooth and DVD player etc.
