XJ8 Starting problems
okay im in desperate need of advice I just bought a jag xj8 1998 no issues with starting nothing, then we change the break pipe, before the change we moved the car forward started fine, break pipe changed and we went to move it back and it would not start? it has now been a week that we have been tying to get it started we have charged the battery fully we have tried to turn it over for 30 seconds like it says on utube, etc and it will just not start. Today because of us trying to get it started the air filter pressure went and it all popped, so now we have to sort that and it seems fuel or oil is in the pipes of the air filter, does anyone have any ideas on why this car wont start and how we investigate to see why? it just seems strange it was absolutely fine running well then suddenly just wont start.
Hi Kernowkingo,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!
I have moved your post from the forum for the X350 to the forum for the X308, which is the Jaguar factory code for your 1998 XJ8. Here your post will be seen by owners of similar cars who may be able to offer assistance.
It might help us if you could clarify which pipe you replaced. Was it part of the brake system? Where is the pipe located in the car?
Is it possible that an electrical connector or vacuum line was disconnected while replacing the pipe and that it just needs to be reconnected?
Jaguar saloons need a very healthy battery. If the cranking voltage falls much below 11V, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will not trigger the ignition to fire. Even though you charged your battery, it may be unhealthy enough that its voltage and current are sagging while cranking.
Please let us know more about the pipe you replaced and its location and hopefully our members will be able to offer helpful suggestions.
Since we're a friendly group, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can give you a proper welcome and learn something about you and your Jag.
And finally, the adminstrator has asked us to encourage members to use proper capitalization and line breaks in their posts so that other members are not discouraged from reading your post. I realize it can be more difficult to capitalize when posting from your phone, but it's worth the extra effort so other members won't skip over your post to avoid eye strain.
Cheers,
Don
Welcome to the forum. Did you change a brake line, or a broken pipe in the air intake or crankcase vent?
You started the car to move it. Did you then shut it off immediately before the engine warmed up? If so, you probably have bore wash, in which raw gas removes the oil film from the cylinder walls. Do a search to learn more and find the cure:

I don't understand your comment on the air filter and can't respond.
