I have learned, over time, to never place any eggs in the Facebook basket.

Not sure what that means, but look for another XJR-100 on BAT soon.

Yea, BAT is definitely a fantasy land. I see cars that can be bought for thousands less through FB, CL, etc. Not sure who's buying these cars at these prices but I guess somebody is.

I actually went to look at a local car that was on BAT a few months back. It was Polo Green 96 Camaro Z28 6-speed with around 50k miles. Clone of a car I sold years back. Seller was nice and car was decent (not as perfect as described in the ad) and I was prepared to buy the car for around $7-8k which I thought it was probably worth. I think the bidding ended up going to $11,700 or something like that. I was blown away that someone would pay that much for a mediocre performance car. Even stuff like that goes for way over market on that site. If I ever sell my GN I'll probably go that route, possibly even my XJR. I've seen a few plain old XJRs with 60-70k miles in similar or worse condition than mine go for mid-teens in the past few months.

There are many cars that, to me, are over priced. But the truth is, a car is worth what someone is willing to pay. I say this all the time, but it is true: M cars, Audi S/RS, AMG, SRT, are everywhere. In the performance sedan world, Jaguars are certainly more unique and to me, prettier. So I can see why that 100 brought what it did. Yes I have a 100, so maybe biased. I was 7 or 8 when the 100 came out, I loved it then. I remember the first time seeing one in person. I almost poo'd myself. Funny enough, I ended up buying that exact car I saw.

In the used car market, demand dictates cost. A rare example tends to climb in value
as there becomes less and less available. That said. In '73, I remember my wife telling me
that my '65 Mustang would NEVER be worth anything because there were too many
on the road. Hmmmm Imagine that,

Guess at some point everything becomes scarce enough to accrue value as long as somebody still wants it. '65 Mustang would be cool to have, definitely worth something today.

That's been my takeaway from BAT also, I enjoy the website and reviewing some of the daily auctions. The comments can be interesting, useful, etc,, but I generally think people way overpay on a regular basis there. Maybe it's the excitement of the auction, or the fact you typically get a much more thorough presentation of a car than on ebay or CL, or maybe it's just a lot of people with deep pockets. It's a great place to sell a car, maybe not to buy one imo. BAT must be making a killing. They're ending 80-100 auctions a day 7 days a week now.

The opening bid initially was a shock, but the final price an eye opener!
100’s keep popping up but I do wonder how many are still on the road. They are wonderful driving cars but I must admit to using mine mostly the attend car events as I make a consented effort to keep the kilometres (mileage) down.

It's pretty funny, I seem to see a decent amount of them for sale also. I assume most owners took good care of them so the majority are still around.

No shame in that, special cars like the 100 should definitely be driven, but also taken good care of. No reason to use a car like that every day and put a ton of miles on.

It’s a shame to have such a beautiful car and you honestly can’t even enjoy it. Every mile you put on it devalues the car but to me, every mile you put on it puts a smile on it.

For example, the very last 1987 Buick Grand National built sold back in January 2022 by the original owner put a whopping 30 miles on it in 35 years. Yes, it sold for $550,000 but, you can’t even enjoy the car!!! What a waste! Is money the ONLY THING that people think about?? There’s soooo much more to life than money.

Definitely a shame to not use it at all. I rememeber that GN, crazy that you could buy that brand new and never drive it. Nothing wrong with keeping miles off a collectible car, but they all should be used at least a bit.

Even at $550k for that car the owner would have done much better investing that money wisely

You can see a buyer's history on BaT. The buyer in the last year bought three Ferraris at $695k, $605k and $250k and $550k on four other cars including an XJR. If someone told him he over paid, I think he'd laugh and light a Cuban cigar with a Ben Franklin.

Not to worry, she is exercised about 3 - 5000 miles/year.
Just feel he/she should be preserved as original as possible without the risk of parking lot and highway damage.
Plus I enjoy regular maintenance rather than battling with a higher mileage car.

IIn my opinion, a car that is not driven and enjoyed is not a car but a showpiece. There are plenty of
places for showpieces and they are nice to look at, but nothing compares to the satisfaction and pleasure
one obtains from driving a well-kept and increasingly rare V-8 underneath a leaping cat.

I've been doing car shows for 35 years and kind of bored with the same old muscle cars, so its fun to fantasize about buying one of the rarities that pop up on BaT. The problem comes when one of those fantasies becomes obsession.

The biggest detractor on BAT is the 7-days. I don't know about everyone else, but I can't cancel two days worth of meetings and beg for deadline extensions just to fly across the country to inspect a car. And if its local, the sellers usually make it extremely inconvenient if I want see it. On the weekend? No way! Many of them are dealers and are closed weekends. But I think mostly sellers are counting on that BaT will somehow round up a bunch of high-stakes internet gamblers to bid on their car and they really don't have to mess with showing it to a bunch of tire kickers.

And BaT doesn't have to cater to buyers like us who work for a living. Generally, buying a dream car is something the average working stiff only does once in a lifetime. If such a person gets burned bidding sight-unseen, he won't be back, but he probably wasn't going to be back again anyway. However, since a lot of their clients are dealers, they will be back selling another car, and another and another if they're making profits without even having to show the cars to prospective bidders.

I really shouldn't be looking at BaT because if it's not local, I have to try and forget I saw it. And if it is local, and I somehow manage to arrange to inspect it, then I just know that some high-roller is going to swoop in and outbid me.

BAT is not for me nor ever will be. Far too inconvenient and too much competition. I travelled 10 hours
to acquire The Duchess, however that was from a Jaguar dealer who was reputable.
