Default 1988 VDP Remote Fob/Alarm?

I've been working on an '88 Vanden Plas and when I got the car it didn't come with any key fobs. I wasn't sure if the car came with them from the factory or if it may have been optional. Did they all come with key fobs? Also, how do I tell if I have any kind of factory alarm system or did this come as standard too? I assumed the earlier cars didn't have the fobs but after reading a few posts noticed that they were available and are hard to locate. Does anyone know how to program the fob to the vehicle? Is this the style fob (pictured) that would have come with the car? Does anyone have a part number? Also, has anyone tried fitting the later X300 style remote/rf board to the XJ40?

Here's a photo of the remote for our '93. For some reason I think the remote for our '88 was different somehow. I also seem to recall that the remotes were changed for 1992, but I can't remember any specifics. I do think that the frequency of the remote is important because it varied by region of the world.

You might send a PM to Rob Evenson to ask about the remote for his car which is an '88 or '89.

Cheers,

Don

I've heard that the 88 and 89 remotes were similar shaped but more square than rectangular. Didn't all US market cars use the 315 mhz remotes? The one you pictured is the same as the ones for my 95 XJS. Any idea on the sequence to program the remote to the car?

Early remotes AFAIK were IR and later ones RF ....plus, as Don said, frequencies differ - there are a few threads in the archive regarding this topic, is there not?

I thought they didn't go to RF until the X300?

The remote for our '93 is marked 318 MHz. Somewhere, either in the EPC or on jaguarclassicparts.com, there is a list of the frequencies by country or region.

I believe that in the Jag-Lovers archives there may be a procedure for programming the remotes. Jagbits has the procedures for the later cars. It might be worth checking their site to see if the earlier cars are listed on another page:

How to re-program your keyless entry remotes 1990-1996 XJ6 Jaguar

Cheers,

Don

The 3.6 cars are IR and the 4.0 cars are RF. (at least for North America)

Thanks frenchfairplaydriver,

If I'm not mistaken, that is an infrared (IR) remote.

Would that picture of the remote frenchfairplaydriver shows be universal ( North American and other markets) or just specific to that region? And how can I actually tell if my system is even set up for a remote or did they all come with them from the factory?

My 1992 Sovereign 4.0 had a dealer installed alarm system. The remotes are RF and look identical to Don's remote for his 1993.

The control module was installed on a bracket that bolted under the LH Driver's Side Dash, near the recirculation vacuum actuator on the L/H blower motor.

The system had a small backup battery and shock sensor hidden in small black boxes labeled "Cruise Systems Ltd." or something similar. There was a siren installed on the R/H inner fender in the engine compartment.

The system was wired using very nice harnesses which have the original factory connectors. There were a few relays under the dash near the module for starter-kill and trunk release solenoid. There was a valet switch under the steering column and a red LED on the top of the steering column. I have the original install manual somewhere...

93+ XJ40s use a fully-integrated alarm module which communicates with the ECM and CPU and is fully programmable with a PDU. 92 and older cars may have a factory system, a dealer installed Jaguar system, or a dealer installed aftermarket system.

You really need to find the control module first before looking for remotes. Your car may not even have an alarm system, and there's no sense wasting time trying to pair a Jaguar remote to a Viper or Clifford alarm. You should look for the modules brand and FCC IDs.

I have seen a few IR systems and I think I remember that the IR receiver is a dome shaped translucent device in the overhead console.

I don't remember where the electronics are mounted but a search of the Electrical Guide might yield more info.

95 LEAPER
THE remote fob from frenchfairplayer IS an IR transmitter for LOCK/UNlock function only. oNE OF MY 89's came with the factory IR SYSTEM and the additional alarm system installed by Jaguar. THE Jaguar installed system disabled the IR system .
My other XJ came with IR ONLY. the receiver is in the overhead light panel. the small "dome " is where the IR photosensitive diode is housed. you have to aim the transmitter (IR) at the dome.

I switched my IR system out for a simple RF system. took 20 minutes and four wire connections. total drop-in replacement.

I lowered my overhead console panel but don't see any receiver unit. All I see is the power sunroof motor. Is it possible my car doesn't have this system installed?

I'm almost positive I don't have that in my overhead console but I'm not near the car to double check. I'll check on that tomorrow though. I'm curious if my particular car was ordered without it?
