Default 1990 Fuel pump solutions.

So I had a talk with a Jag mechanic about my starting issues, a noisy fuel pump etc. Apparently the fuel pump in use in the earlier model is very suseptible to vaporlock and will cause hard/erratic starting and stalling especially in hot weather. He said their solution was to piggyback two fuel pumps together and that seemed to solve the problem. He said he could do it for ~500 bucks (using my old fuel pump and a used pump). I know that most pumps are in-tank now adays but I am kind of hard pressed to beleave that there is no fuel pump that is out of tank that can't supply fuel in hot weather.

Does anyone know of any aftermarket pumps that might fit the bill? I am sure I could do the piggyback if I had a schematic of how it went together. I assume they just split the inlet to the two pumps and join the outlets to the engine? That still means I need another fuel pump and some more fuel line and fittings.

Thanks

I assume you have a 1990 XJ6, if so than the fuel pump is located behind the fuel filter, below the left rear door. Its hose clamped to the suspension parts and is fairly easy to change. $500 sounds very steep for such an easy repair. On my 90 i bought a generic pump from an auto parts store and it worked fine for over 80,000 miles. As it sits in an area where it is subjected to moisture and dirt make sure there are no broken or stripped wires. Also if and when you do the replacement use a ner fuel filter. I dont think you will neea a second pump. If you are not getting enough fuel you fuel tank might no be venting as it should (mimics vapor lock) to see if that is happening loosen filler cap as it will let the tank vent (dont drive it this way correct the venting problem) hope this helps out Lumppy

Jaguar did come out with a piggy back style fuel pump to solve hot start problems. Your mechanic is not lying to you there. That said, our shop is in Houston (plenty hot) and I've never actually seen it installed.

I would try a new pump first.

Thanks, I guess I will go buy a new pump then. Any recomendations on a low cost pump? Are pumps fairly standard(IE just about any inline electric pump will do?) or do I need to make sure it is speced to fit the car.

i bought an aftermarket, it wasnt to expensive (under $100.00). Just make sure that its not any bigger than the stock one (not a lot of room where it mounts. When i did mine I wraped it in rubber before mounting (a section of an old motorcycle tube works well) good luck Lumppy
