1990 xj6 transmission light on dash
The transmission light just came on and it stays in high gear and when I turn the car off it beeps many times. What is wrong and how can I fix this ?
It may be as simple as a bad solenoid or something worse that needs to overhaul the tranny . I was told not to drive the car with that light on , it could go bad to worse .
My suggestion you have a mechanic inspect your tranny

Most of us that own jags 90-94 have seen that light as well. Your car is in "limp" mode. Do a search here in the forum, plenty of good stuff to help find and fix it. From very easy to a little more intense. Don't panic

Yes, don't panic. This is a fairly common event for this car. Suspect the mechanics of the transmission only as a last resort. There is so much else it could be, which is now your job to track down. The average mechanic is probably not going to take the time to work through the process of elimination required. The good news is that it could be something pretty simple. There is an excellent, systematic step-by-step process for trouble shooting the tranny-light/Limp mode on the Jag-Lovers site as part of the XJ40 e-book. It is sticky-linked in the FAQ portion of this forum. Go there and read all about it. Let us know if you are having any problems, but more especially how you are getting on and what you discover remedies the problem.
Good luck!
