Default 1993 Daimler Double Six 6.0L / XJ40 /XJ12 Alternator question

Greetings.
I am looking to replace my 1993 Daimler Double Six alternator with a high performance 175A WOSP alternator. I replaced the alternator on my 1992 5.3L XJS with a 175A WOSP and have never regretted it. They are great products.

Looking for the upgrade alternator for my DD6 is a bit more challenging. WOSP doesn’t seem to have a model to replace DBC11590 (the part# for the DDS 6.0 alternator) but, I believe, it does have one to replace DBC6820. That is part that fits the 6.0L XJS that was made between 1992/3 and 1996. My understanding is that the 6.0L XJS engine is identical to the XJ40/XJ12 6.0L produced between 1992 and 1994. Am I correct?

Does anyone have experience interchanging these two alternators from the XJS 6.0L and DD6 / XJ40 6.0L? One key issue of the 6.0L alternator is the number of lugs: 2 on the DDS vs. 3 on the earlier XJS 5.3L engines.

Many thanks,

Charles

Charles,
what is your rationale for getting a higher amp rating alternator?
If you're referring to the round plug, it carries ignition switched power (IGN), charge indicator (L/lamp) and D on both alternators. On the XJ12 6.0, D is not connected - there's no wire in the loom. If it fits mechanically, it should work. That said, I have no knowledge about the type of pulley used on the XJS 5.3 vs 6.0 vs 6.0 XJ.

Rationale for replacing the alternator:
During summer months in Hong Kong if I am at a traffic light at idle with AC on full; lights on; wiper blades going, de-mist on rear windows . . . the lights will sometimes dim and the battery gauge will drop well below the halfway mark. A couple of times the car has cut out and the battery light goes on. I put the car in park and start right back up again (so I believe its not the battery) and take off. It only happens under those exact conditions. All other times it is fine. When I purchased my XJS in 2020 it had sat un-used for a number of years so one of the many items I replaced was the alternator (along with water pump, thermostats, belts, water rails, all coolant hoses, ignition coils, plugs, bushings, distributor cap, rotor arm, and leads , . . . I followed the Stickys from the master in Adelaide!!) The 175A WOSP has been an excellent addition.

I've had the Daimler Double Six since 2011 and the garage I used to go to refurbished the alternator at the time of purchase. The garage at that time had a difficult time finding the proper alternator. Even Jaguar/Land Rover quoted the wrong part number at that time. Is it DBC11590 or DBC12258 (Bosch)? Any advice on part number would be welcome.

It has been such a genuine pleasure to drive both the 5.3L XJS and the 6.0L Daimler. Really different performance from the engines and transmissions. Both, however, iconic. And, if well taken care of, incredibly reliable despite the stereotypes.

Hi Charles,
I will just throw this out for whatever use it may be to readers. I had the alternator go out in my 92 Sov. recently and dug out the alternator that I had stashed from the 94 xj12 which I stripped in my parts department. I installed that unit and it has been working fine. Point being that if the v12 unit will work in the 6, wiring position should be the only difference wherever you get your unit. The difference being (and I think cause of the different part number) was that the connections were rotated 180 degrees. I was able to simply re-route the wiring and it has been fine ever since. This may or may not work for a unit intended for the 6 used in a 12. BTW, out of curiosity, I had a look online at the time for the v12 alternator and found that it is very hard to get as you are seeing.
Good luck however you do it,
