Default 1993 starting problem

Hey Guys!!

I just acquire a 1993 XJ6.

It's been sitting outside in someone's backyard for bout 5 yrs.

I got a new battery, filters, oil change, plugs, electric fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. I pulled out all the injectors to clean them. Alarm L.E.D. on the dash stays on until I turn the key to try to crank it then the L.E.D. goes off.

Here's the problem:

When I try to crank it up in park, it juts makes a clicking noise.

When I put it in neutral it turns over but doesn't crank up.

I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with this thing..... can you guys HELP?!?!?!

Check for spark.
Check to see if fuel is getting to fuel rail.
Make sure your security system is working as it should
Also reset inertia switch.

Yep..... got new plugs..... all got spark including coil.
Yep..... got new fuel pumps, filter & pressure reg... pulledg rail.... gas flows thru.

Security??
The red light on the dash is on. When I turn the key to crank it goes off. I don't have a remote for the alarm. Where is the alarm module to disable the alarm system?

Inertia Switch??
Where is this located? There is a box behind the fuse box that shuts down the starting system. That's been set & reset.

So you have a spark at the plugs and fuel through the injectors?

The blinking red led, I doubt has much to do with the problem. However try turning the valet switch off, seemingly located in the center cubby box (although mine is on the underside of the steering column??)

You have found and reset the inertia switch OK.

Are you 100% sure that the battery is fully charged, even if it is new? (you say the car clicks when trying to crank in P). What does the dash gauge read, before and during cranking?

Turn your headlights full on and crank the car in N what happens?

These cars can act very strangely if the battery is not 100%.

Can't remember who, but someone recently had a problem with the gearbox park sensor switch, causing the car not to crank in P. You need to dismantle the center console to get at it.

Have you tested all the fuses.

Does your fuel pump come on for a few seconds when you turn the key to position 3?

MY 93 was sitting for a few years and also didnt want to start, i also had a bunch of electrical problems besides not starting. There was a lot of oxidation on my electric connections so i cleaned all of the connections (took fuse boxes apart and cleaned contacts and put new fuses in and presto it started) also cleaned the crankshaft positiong unit (sprayed with contact cleaner and then wiped off.Are you sure that the distributor is in the right position as that could cause problem good luck Lumppy

That person with the fault at the park sensor was me! Believe me I tried all sorts to get going. It would be well worth checking this because, prior to me checking mine, I had similar problems to those you are describing.
Gonna get mine running today, I've made a promise to myself. lol.

Sorry for forgetting that redjon, don't know why, but I had it in my mind that you had an ignition switch issue. Put it down to not enough tea, or old age. Now, who the dickens has the ignition switch problem?

Let's hope that you both can get going soon;-)

Hmmmm... why was this moved to an XJ40 thread?? I got a 93 XJ6.

Anyways...... WOW!!! You guys won't believe this........

I bought some gas from Shell when I first tried to start the car. I let the fuel pump shoot the fuel thru the pressure reg..... The fuel was yellow like **** or anti-freeze looking. Threw some of that fuel on the ground and tried to ignite it with a lighter.... didn't even t catch fire!! I THINK the fuel change it's molecular compound (whatever it's called) after sitting for several years. I pumped all the old fuel out and put some new fule from another gas station. The sucker fired up!!! Oh... I also put turned off the alarm valet switch.

BAD GAS!!!
