1994 Jaguar XJ12 steering problem

Hello!
I have a problem that is concerning my steering. when I am stopped, I can "turn" the steering wheel hard left or right a bit, and the car will drive straight, but the wheel will not be centered. It is unnerving, and weird. i suspect that maybe the steering rubber coupling is worn/torn, but this is just a guess. The alignment is good, and the tires are wearing evenly. This gets a little "hairy" when stopping on a curve. I'm going to have to sell this beautiful car, and I don't want to incur any large expenses right now. Any help would be appreciated. Much thanks (in advance).
