1994 XJ6 Brake Light and No Start
Hello, I have a 1994 xj6 jaguar and recently I just brought a new battery, so when I turn my ignition to start the car the brake light comes on...which then prevents me from turning the key again. No noise or humming noise. Help please. Also I removed the 10amp fuse on the left side for security ecu; the alarm goes off and I have no remote nor does the door lock/unlock work.
Hi Kljy300,
I have moved your post from the other thread since your symptoms are substantially different, and I have moved your post from the forum for the X300 to the forum for the XJ40. Since you haven't provided your location, I am assuming you are in North America and your 1994 XJ6 is a factory code XJ40.
If you live in the U.K. or some other regions, your 1994 XJ6 may be an early X300. In order to be of any assistance it will be important for us to know which model you own. Your country or even continent would help, but the last six digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) would help us the most.
In the meantime, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jag and give you a proper welcome.
Cheers,
Don

To clarify, are you saying that you cant turn the key all the way to start, or that once you release it, the key wont go Back to start? On mine once the key has been turned to start it must be returned to the off position before cranking again. I doubt the brake light has anything to do with it other than its a self check mode on start.
As for the security system, mine has a manual off switch in the armrest-- as I recall.
I would go look but I already had to walk away from it today trying to chase electrics...
Hope this helps some... good luck

The brake light coming on has nothing to do with your no-start situation. More on that later.
I wonder if removing the fuse for the security ECU may be part of your no-start issue. I think that if you reconnect the ECU, get in the car and close the doors, then attempt to start the car with the key, the alarm may stop sounding. If not, try hitting the door lock panic button on the dash in the row of switches near the radio. If I recall correctly, the security ECU is directly tied in to the central door locking system, so reconnecting the ECU may restore your locking. I haven't had to deal with this issue so hopefully one of our other members will have some ideas.
The last 6 of the vin is 694867. Recently someone broke my window, stole my owners manual, paperwork for the car, and my keys. I had to exchange my current battery for a new one because it was completely dead. I get a new battery and i turn the ignition and the engine doesn't crank,sound,nothing.... The key turns all the way just once I release it after the car not starting it doesn't let me turn again to the start position.
As soon as I try to start, the brake light appears then disappears. Update* now the light stays on.Also the transmission and anti lock lights are on. New key, new battery, no signs of harm done to the car for it not to start up? I removed the left side fuse for the abs because the alarm was going off...
The transmission light may be coming on simply because the engine isn't starting. I would sort out the problem with the key turning and engine starting and then see if you still have the transmission light.
Cheers,
Don

My first impression of the behavior of your key is that you may have a problem with the ignition key lock barrel. It might be worth squirting a solvent oil into the lock and working the key around as much as you can to help free any sticking tumblers. Normally you don't want to use a liquid lubricant on a lock because it will attract dust over time and make the problem occur again, but I don't think powdered graphite will do the trick for you in this case. I can't recall whether the XJ40 has a steering wheel lock but it might be worth wiggling the wheel the next time the key won't turn.
The brake power assist system in your car is not the typical vacuum-operated type. It is hydraulically operated and has an electric pump that pressurizes hydraulic fluid and stores pressure in a hydraulic accumulator sphere mounted on the right side of the bulkhead/firewall in the engine compartment. The symptoms you describe indicate a problem with the system. It is normal for the BRAKE and ANTI-LOCK lamps to illuminate at startup, but they should extinguish after a few seconds (or several seconds, depending on how long the car has been sitting). This is the amount of time required for the pump to re-pressurize the system. The most common problem is a weakened or failed diaphragm in the accumulator, but problems with the combined low pressure/warning lamp switch are also known. I have not heard of pumps failing but our cars are old enough that we'll probably face that problem too.

I also feel like their are 2 different alarm sounds, one is low tone and the annoying on is more louder with a weird tone. Also to add my a/c now wants to come on once in a blue moon.

Nothing worked Don. The brake light now doesn't come on until I turn the ignition, then it goes away. Smh I feel like my car is teasing me. #Iwishmy carcouldtalk

Unlock/lock with the key, plugging the 10am fuse back in it's slot, turning the key, turning the security system button on and off(arm rest console)(the alarm goes off while off). Overriding the shift into neutral, adding motor oil, transmission fluid, pretty much everything. I must add their is an wire that looks cut(behind driver side fuse console. I will upload pictures) & their is an yellow/white cable that is hanging loose in the back of the trunk next to the battery
