Chance to buy 1990 xj6
I am considering buying a 1990 silver xj6. I know a Little but about these cars based on my experience with my grandparents 1989 model. The car has 95000 miles and a clear title and good paint and running order. The seller is asking $1500. Just wondering if anyone had any extra knowledge on this model year? Id like to get it if the price is right just as a clean xj40 to hold onto. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Cole

Hi Cole,
The 1990 model year saw a number of changes compared to your grandparents' '89. The instrument panel was changed from the vacuum fluorescent display to conventional gauges and warning lamps. The engine displacement was increased from 3.6L to 4.0L. I think that may also be the year the differential ratio was changed from 2.88:1 to 3.58:1, which gives the car better acceleration at the expense of the engine running about 500 rpm higher at all speeds.
For a nice clean car with 95K original miles $1,500 may be a reasonable price, but service records would help you know whether certain common problems have been dealt with. Common failure points include the head gasket, self-leveling rear suspension (if equipped), front wheel bearings, front control arm bushes, rear subframe bushes, blue unsealed Hella relays, fuel pump, and others. Knowing that some or all of these issues have been addressed may make the car a good buy.
Hopefully others will respond with additional thoughts.
Cheers,
Don
