So long as the oil level is good, and it is not radically contaminated, the most likely cause for your gauge fluctuation is a faulty oil pressure transmitter. The gauge is reading inaccurately as a result, and the engine is fine.
The transmitter is not in an easy place to get to, and there are several options of new transmitters to install to solve the problem. If you need more information, go to the XJ40 forum and post another question there.
