Question 94 XJ40 Passenger airbag Blower Removal

Hi, just about ready to dive in to the dash to remove the aircon blowers.

There are detailed instructions for blower removal for earlier models, but on my '94 there isn't a glove box but an airbag instead. Haynes basically advises against doing "anything" near the unit but as far as I can tell the airbag module may obstruct access to the passenger side blower, so looks like I will have to go "near" it.

Anyone done a blower removal/refit on an XJ40 fitted with passenger airbag? Can I remove/refit the airbag module (safely) if I need to?

Thanks in advance

all the best

I haven't done the job with an airbag..yet. First thing is to pull the fuses. And if you cant find any direction on how to remove it, do everything from underneath the bag. It's awkward but can be done, and safety is the first thing. You can even remove the passenger seat so you can lie on your back. Even in the Haynes manual is says to bring it to Jag dealer. It also says to Stay clear of the vicinity of deployment, thus my suggestion for going underneath.

Hey thanks, just not sure if it's an electrically fired unit - I was reading that the '94 XJS's had a mechanical SRS bag that was independent of the electrical system that responded to jolts and shocks etc ..probably the same system on the SRS '94 XJ40 maybe?

Default Airbag

Lawrence,

I read your post earlier today and did some outreach to some people on another forum and I'm waiting on a response. From what I read today, the airbag on your MY is mechanical, not electrical, and there is a documented method for removing it to work on the blower. I'll post as soon as I get it, which should be one or two days.

Lawrence,

As promised, please find attached a document describing the airbag removal for MY 94 XJ6 & XJS. Go to page 4 of the doc to read about the passenger bag. Thanks to Bryan N.

Good Luck

Thanks a bunch, Rob - much appreciated!

I guess from now on we'll have to refer to the '94 glove box area as "the hurt locker":-)

When I get in there I'll take some photos and post them to this thread.
Hopefully nothing will go Bang!

This is such a great forum!!

Really appreciate you going the extra mile, Rob.

All the best and thanks again
