Air Pump

Air Pump
Hey Gang. I bought a "91" sj6 about 3 months ago. No major problems, one annoying one. The belt to the air pump screams. I cut it off because replacing it requires removing the fan assembly. I think it was original, it was in real bad shape. In the shop manual it says the air pump is optional. Any thoughts on replacing the belt, or just leave it off?

Greetings Cyril,
Nice to run into a neighbor here. You're right about having to remove the fan blade to replace the air pump belt: not a big deal though. Either is running the car without the air pump operational.
The air pump is a control device that reduces measurable tailpipe emissions: it's mandated to be operational on your car by federal law, and necessary in areas where Echeck or other regular vehicle inspections are performed. You can run the car without it to no ill effect. I'd put a belt on it, since a good pump will sieze if it is left without one. Then the day comes when you want to sell the car and have to go through this whole explanation to a buyer.
Running without the pump can illuminate a check engine light, although that is not necessarily the case on a 1991.
Give me a call or stop by if I can be of further assistance. Other than paint and bodyork, I am quite experienced with all phases of repair on your model XJ6. Congrats on the purchase of yours.
